The aim of the study is to determine the ways in which, pastoralist women in Nigeria can help in resolving the conflicts between pastoralists and vegetable farmers by diversifying into vegetable farming along with assisting the pastoralists in cattle rearing. The research will be conducted to answer the research question, using primary and secondary methods of research. The survey of pastoralists and their women and interviews of the community heads will be conducted to collect the data. The data collected through survey instrument will be analyzed using pie charts and the data collected through conducting interview will be analyzed. The results will be analyzed and their practical implication will be discussed.
Purpose of the proposed study
The purpose of the study will be to find the ways in which, women of the pastoralists in Nigeria can help in resolving the conflicts between pastoralists and vegetable farmers by diversifying into vegetable farming along with assisting the pastoralists in cattle rearing.
Relevant background literature
The conflict between the pastoralists and the farmers in Nigeria has existed since the inception of agriculture, but these clashes were kept at a low frequency due to low settlement densities and prevalence of tsetse. There have been a considerable number of issues of conflicts between the two communities. The first reason of conflict between the two communities is related to the southward migration of the herds of pastoralists into the sub-humid and humid zones, due to the expansion of the farming related activities and availability of the veterinary medicines against the cattle diseases in these areas (Ofuoku & Isife, 2009). This migration causes the crop damage, cattle theft, extensive use of the resources, uncomplimentary policies of the government, farming along the valleys and water pollution in these areas. The conflict between the two groups is rising in its dimension due to the incorporation of the political, religious and ethnic factors into the same. Cattle rustling, intra-pastoralist conflicts, mercenary elements and availability of lethal weapons have further added to the fire between the two communities in Nigeria (Muhammed, Ismaila, & Bibi, 2015).
