Clinical Area of Interest

Catheterization is a routine bedside procedure undertaken to facilitate fluid drainage from an anatomic organ. This procedure is also effectively undertaken to facilitate feeding in various chronic conditions. Major catheterization sites include the urinary bladder, heart, and trachea. Urethral catheterization is prevalently performed across the bed-side in the context of treating chronic and acute urinary retention. Patients affected with incomplete bladder emptying also require catheterization to minimize the risk of urinary retention and resultant urinary tract infection (Shah, 2012). Other significant objectives of urethral catheterization include the evaluation of fluid balance, urine sampling, drugs insertion into the bladder, radiological assessment of the urinary tract, and management of urinary incontinence in the palliative care settings. Urinary catheterization, in my opinion, is a complex medical procedure that requires substantial experience and expertise in the context of reducing the risk of clinical complications. The inappropriate insertion of a Foley catheter in many situations leads to the elevation of urinary incontinence and retention episodes. Therefore, safe and effective catheter administration is necessarily required to minimize the risk of urinary tract infections and associated elevation in the patient care burden. Some of the adverse outcomes of inappropriate Foley catheter insertion include bacterial colonization, antibiotic resistance, chronic infection, bladder and kidney deterioration, bladder stones, pseudopolyps, septicemia, urethral trauma, and accumulation of balloon fragments of the ruptured catheter (Feneley, Hopley, & Wells, 2015). Therefore, my preliminary objective attributes to the enhancement of Foley catheter insertion skills in the context of minimizing the risk of patient complications, including infection and trauma.    

Conceptual Reflective Framework

I intend to elevate my skills related to male and female catheterization. I need to reevaluate my knowledge of female and male genital anatomy while attaining a greater insight regarding the Foley insertion practices. I also require elevating my skills and expertise in handling various catheter types (while focussing on Foley technique) with the objective of effectively undertaking the tasks related to bladder washouts and insertion. I require improving my knowledge and understanding regarding the use of antibiotics during the administration of long-term indwelling catheters. The assessment of catheter drainage options, catheterization necessity, catheter maintenance procedures, and patient education interventions is also needed to minimize the risk of catheter-based complications in the treated patients (NICE, 2012).
