  1. There are technical parts of a Research Report that require technical information (Title, Contents, List of Refs, Acknowledgements, Appendices) and that will not count as part of the word count of the project.
  2. Elsewhere the word count figures are guides only. Each student's particular project may lend itself more towards lengthier parts for some categories than others. Regular discussions in class and with the course co-ordinator will keep things in perspective.

The research report is an overview of the issues of world Englishes. It presents the varieties of English in a different socio-economic context. It further deals with the power-related, cultural and ideological issues of English and how it is being considered as a killer language in the context of India. The study is done in a specific country in order to delve into the issues that may vary from region to region. The further sections begin with the ‘pluricentric’ view of English bringing a conceptual shift that promotes multilingualism in the case of English but also refrains the speakers from using other languages in some way. This study would show the impact of English in the globalization era and its impact on India that has been an attraction for linguists because of its multilingualism.

The growth in international trade and the influence of American politics, military forces, English language have undergone both upliftment and degradation of English for the researchers working in this area. Scholars debate that with the change in cultural practices, the English language has witnessed a detachment from its soil, and has been modified and appropriated for its local as well as international use. While undergoing the process of globalization, it has seen great changes in both ways: rich and strange (Bhatt 2001). Countless regional varieties have appeared in which some of them are seen with high degree of divergence from the English of native speakers. The English of the native speaker has a weak role around the globe especially in the outer circle as in the ex-British colonies of Asia and Africa for they take the liberty to go their own way saying it’s their English (Kachru 1985). Those who bring and approve the changes talk about its enrichment; those who view English as in Standard English worry about its strangeness on the other hand (Jenkins 2003). The emergence of ‘World Englishes’, thus, has been going through serious debates by scholars of both the views.

In this paper, I would like to discuss and show the growth of English in India or rather of ‘Indian English’, and its impact on socio-economic issues. I would also discuss the ways in which English has been affected by the local languages.
