Abstract

Computer networks are essential for efficient business operations. Nowadays, more and more SMEs are becoming dependent on timely information and communications to achieve business goals. The report analysis the network requirements for the company named uSoft.com. A network is developed for this company which has 5 departments and users are the many employees under each department.  The company has expanded recently and is set to grow at 15% in the coming year. Hence, the existing network capacity must be increased to cope with this growth of data, users and there is a need for the more efficient data network. The report provides discussion on the analysis of network requirements, logical design to include aspects of security and wireless access, and the creation of subnets with IP addressing plan as a private network, is shown in different tables and discussed in the report. The logical design diagram illustrates the physical connectivity between all components in the network.

Introduction 

The report provides the redesign of existing local area network (LAN) for the company named uSoft.com. uSoft.com has recently expanded its business operations, thus leading to an increase in the number of employees. As all the day-to-day functions are done using computers, the capacity of their existing LAN must be increased in terms of efficiently without data loss (Uwizeyemungu, Poba-Nzaou, & St-Pierre, 2015). Thus, the management decides to revamp the existing LAN to meet the growing demands of business expansion. The report discusses the LAN infrastructure designs and related aspects to ensure all employees have access to information in uSoft.com according to their portfolio. 

Problem Context

uSoft.com faces the problem of limitations in their IT capacity. In order to achieve business goals, the company must enhance communications, wireless and VoIP, and so on. At the same time, since data generation has increased due to expansion, this must be protected and company information must not be lost. The existing LAN is unable to accommodate new users, more data and needs higher processing power and hence the existing LAN capacity must be increased to achieve both, business and technical goals (Dhillon & Caire, 2015). These are some of the problems faced by the company after expansion. 

The technical goals to fulfill for uSoft.com are:

• The LAN must be scalable, and hence adequate provisions are made to ensure resources are available when there is an increase in number of users. 
• Employees must be able to access company information from both within the office and from remote locations
• The performance of the network must be high.
• Information must be secured and data protection is a top priority.
• The LAN must be flexible enough to create more logical groups as required.
• The LAN must be available for any users with wireless network access. Hence, wireless access must be enabled.
