What is your subject about? A brief overview

This subject builds on the extensive review of the research topic in the area of Information Technology (IT) that students commenced in previous coursework subjects in the course. The subject requires students to reflect on their research plan, develop a detailed research proposal, with ethics approval as appropriate, defend their research proposal, and collect data using appropriate data collection techniques. Students will develop expertise relating to a major research issue and will have the opportunity to publish their research in academic conference proceedings or refereed journals.

How you are expected to engage with the subject

This is the last coursework subject that you have in DIT and is the continuation of the research projects that have commenced, particularly the project in ITC713. There are six topics in the subject:

  1.  Generic Research Approaches;
  2.  Empirical Research Methods;
  3.  Statistical Basics, Data Analysis and Knowledge Discovery;
  4. Statistical Test and Analysis;
  5. Analysing, Interpreting and Synthesizing Research Results for the Presentation of Research  Findings; and
  6. Reviewing and Publishing.

One of the main objectives of this subject is conducting the research project you have formulated in ITC713 and producing a publishable paper by the end of the session. Another important objective is to prepare a research proposal for your DIT studies. There are four assessment items that are designed to help you achieving these objectives.

Complete and submit a research proposal. This research proposal will be used as the initial draft for your formal research proposal. The final research proposal approval process requires the successful defence of the proposal at a colloquium/seminar attended by staff and peers. You will be advised about your proposal defence process individually.

In the research proposal, a justification for the proposed research has to be made and the methodology to be used in your research has to be outlined. The justification for the study should demonstrate that the student is familiar with the key literature in the area and can critically evaluate it and can use it to build an argument to justify the research question.

The length of the proposal should be appropriate to the topic but generally should be between 20 and 25 pages in length. It should include a plain English abstract of no more than 200 words and a timetable for the completion of your DIT research with a set of identified milestones.  The possible components of the proposal could be (1) Abstract; (2) Introduction; (3) Research Objectives; (4) Literature Review; (5) Methodology; (6) Work Plan; (7) Conclusion; and (8) References.

Big data applications implemented in cloud computing platforms are proving to be a business driver across various industries and business domains. It can be found that big data encompasses multiple data types that are unstructured. Big data sources, when integrated with transaction data, can be analyzed to obtain insight information that can provide value for organizations. Cloud computing platforms offer IT as a service with substantial computing resources. Cloud computing services are cost-effective as organizations can outsource their IT needs with the cloud provider and incur only operational cost. Big data due to its high volume require robust infrastructure which can handle high volume datasets from multiple sources. The infrastructure is available from cloud services, and hence organizations are increasingly moving towards cloud adoption. Hence, big data workloads are ideal for cloud platforms. Since big data provides deep insights for business growth and clouds are cost-effective, this combination works out well for organizations to gain business value. In this proposal, the aspects of big data with cloud are discussed to emphasize this integration will provide business value and enable business outcomes. The proposal highlights the primary research method through an online survey to understand if big data with clouds can be a value enabler for businesses. Data is collected through a survey questionnaire which is made available online. Companies already having big data with cloud implementation are considered to participate in this survey. Data collected is further analyzed using statistical methods to understand if big data applications in the cloud provide improvements for business value or not.

The term big data has emerged to become a widely recognized trend during the last decade. Big data stems from the continuous increase in data in terms of volume and variety captured by organizations (De Mauro, Greco, & Grimaldi, 2015). The rise of social media platforms, the new trends in IoT (the Internet of Things), multimedia and other data sources such as RFID, sensors, contribute to data growth. All these data are generated continuously in addition to transactional data generated in organizations. Therefore all this data creation is collectively called the term 'big data'. Big data can be understood as: data that is enormous, unstructured and cannot fit into regular relational databases.  Big data is receiving enormous interest globally for all types of organizations as they contain useful information which is hidden and not easily visible from relational datasets (Villers, Olofson, & Eastwood, 2011). Big data processing is transforming a variety of application areas such as healthcare, banking, manufacturing, aerospace, retail and so on. Due to change in the data managed by organizations in general, technology advancements provided the lever for storing, processing and preserving increased amounts of data irrespective of its nature. At the same time, the growth of cloud computing services is considered as ideal platforms for storing, handling and updating intensive workloads as required by big data (Kaisler, Armour, Espinosa, & Money, 2013).

Cloud computing is a significant technology development that provides a shift in IT services towards offering immense benefits for enterprise organizations compared to in-house IT management (Shayan, Azarnik, Chuprat, Karamizadeh, & Alizadeh, 2014). Over the years, cloud computing platforms prove to be a powerful architecture with abilities to perform large-scale computing tasks that are complex. Cloud computing services offer minimized costs without any resource restrictions for computerization, security, automation and software implementation for enterprises. Further, clouds provide enterprises with reduced infrastructure maintenance cost and efficient user access (Chih-Wei, Chih-Ming, Chih-Hung, & Chao-Tung, 2013)..
