This subject builds on the extensive review of the research topic in the area of Information Technology (IT) that students commenced in previous coursework subjects in the course. The subject requires students to reflect on their research plan, develop a detailed research proposal, with ethics approval as appropriate, defend their research proposal, and collect data using appropriate data collection techniques. Students will develop expertise relating to a major research issue and will have the opportunity to publish their research in academic conference proceedings or refereed journals.
How you are expected to engage with the subject
This is the last coursework subject that you have in DIT and is the continuation of the research projects that have commenced, particularly the project in ITC713. There are six topics in the subject:
- Generic Research Approaches;
- Empirical Research Methods;
- Statistical Basics, Data Analysis and Knowledge Discovery;
- Statistical Test and Analysis;
- Analysing, Interpreting and Synthesizing Research Results for the Presentation of Research Findings; and
- Reviewing and Publishing.
One of the main objectives of this subject is conducting the research project you have formulated in ITC713 and producing a publishable paper by the end of the session. Another important objective is to prepare a research proposal for your DIT studies. There are four assessment items that are designed to help you achieving these objectives.

Complete and submit a research proposal. This research proposal will be used as the initial draft for your formal research proposal. The final research proposal approval process requires the successful defence of the proposal at a colloquium/seminar attended by staff and peers. You will be advised about your proposal defence process individually.
In the research proposal, a justification for the proposed research has to be made and the methodology to be used in your research has to be outlined. The justification for the study should demonstrate that the student is familiar with the key literature in the area and can critically evaluate it and can use it to build an argument to justify the research question.
The length of the proposal should be appropriate to the topic but generally should be between 20 and 25 pages in length. It should include a plain English abstract of no more than 200 words and a timetable for the completion of your DIT research with a set of identified milestones. The possible components of the proposal could be (1) Abstract; (2) Introduction; (3) Research Objectives; (4) Literature Review; (5) Methodology; (6) Work Plan; (7) Conclusion; and (8) References.

The proposal highlights the primary research method through an online survey to understand if big data with clouds can be a value enabler for businesses. Data is collected through a survey questionnaire which is made available online. Companies already having big data with cloud implementation are considered to participate in this survey. Data collected is further analyzed using statistical methods to understand if big data applications in the cloud provide improvements for business value or not.
