Question

Consider an organisational change you have recently experienced (or are experiencing) and apply one of the models of organisational change studied in Topic 3. Explain what led to the success or failure in the implementation.

Solution

The aged care industry is the kind of business sector wherein empathy collaborates with smart business and the number of beneficiaries is constantly on the rise. The increasing number of aged population in Australia has given a huge boost to this industry and recently a large number of players have come into this industry (Brief, 2015). While to date, the majority of the market is dominated by not-for-profit organizations, but there is an increasing trend of for-profit organizations gradually getting their hold in this booming sector.

As a result, it becomes necessary that the organizations maintain a well-defined structure in their working so that more people are attracted to this industry. There is a high requirement for imbibing the sense of responsibility coupled with a strong business acumen which will make sure that the employees in these organizations are motivated enough to genuinely show care and love for the beneficiaries of these aged care facilities.

Hence, the main approach of the organizational change is to make sure that the employees learn to connect with each other and the beneficiaries at a personal level. The change model should be such that both the employees and the beneficiaries should feel the human touch in their activities.

There are two aspects of the aged care industry – the care recipients and the care providers. The care recipients are primarily people over the age of 55 years who suffer from chronic illnesses or disability and don't have the proper resources in respect of the workforce to take care of them. The care providers are organizations that provide residential and home care facilities. As of 2015, there are around 1300 aged care providers who operate around 3000 aged care facilities with approximately 180000 aged care places. Not-for-profit organizations dominate the market with about 58% of the market share. However, there has been an increasing influx of for-profit organizations which has led to disruptive changes in the working model and work culture.   Professionalism has increased and the quality of services provided has bettered. Also, there are around 2000 players that provide home care facilities that have an operation in around 60000 facilities. Here also, the market is dominated by not-for-profit organizations that have a market share of 81% and this includes various types like community-based, religion-based and general charitable trusts (Brief, 2015).

The workforce in the aged care industry consists of a doctor, nurses, support staff which includes cleaning, procurement, medical equipment providers etc. There are around 350000 currently employed staff which consists of 150000 community care providers. The workforce is mostly dominated by non-direct care workers and then comes the residential care workforce which has the combined task of coordinating the various activities, managing the whole operation and administering the services.

Nurses are highly in demand in this industry but the shortage in their availability has led to an increased importance of the lower-skilled workers who gain experience with working with the available nurses and doctors (ACSA, 2014). The workforce mostly consists of women and their median age varies between 48 and 55 years. They tend to be older than the overall working age in Australia.
