Assessment 1: Online forum discussions

Participate in online forum discussions within MySCU. A series of two (2) forums will be posted during the study period regarding contemporary issues in Multimedia and Information Technology.

Forum guidelines

For each forum, contributions need to display an understanding of multiple perspectives regarding the issue under discussion. Specific positions are encouraged, but need to be argued based upon critical reasoning and utilise published materials (hard copy and/or electronic) from the media and academic literature. Ideas and words used from other sources need appropriate Harvard referencing. The word length is a guide only, as it is much more important for students to display consideration, analysis and synthesis of the issues and arguments made to each forum by participants.

Assessment criteria for each forum 

Although not necessarily assigned formal marks for each criterion, as a guide to this task the following criteria should be considered:

Research in media and academic literature and referencing (2 marks)

Content and Analysis with logic of argument (6 marks)

Clarity of structure, writing style and grammar. (2 marks)

Penalties apply for late submission of this assessment task at the rate of 10% loss per calendar day late. Applications for special consideration must be submitted before the due date of the assessment task (except in cases of emergency) and all applications will be examined according to the rules of Southern Cross University.

Assessment 2: Essay

An essay question will be specified through MySCU which all students must answer.

Please note: Always keep a copy of your work!

Your essay should include, but not be limited by the following elements:

  1. Academic referencing protocols are required.
  2. Use headings if appropriate.
  3. Number your pages, and have the unit code (ISY10212) and your name (or Student Identification Number) on the footer of each page.
  4. For electronic submissions ensure that the file is .doc and titled as: ISY10212_essay_[studentNameHere].doc.

Assessment criteria for the essay question

Research: (6 marks)

  • evidence of appropriate breadth and depth of research for the question
  • relationship and relevance of articles to the question
  • appropriate referencing of articles.

Content and Analysis: (22 marks)

  • clear and appropriate understanding of the question
  • critical discussion of the question
  • logical argument demonstrated through referenced articles.

Clarity: (7 marks)

  • suitable structure and organisation
  • clarity of writing style for readability
  • appropriate expression, grammar and spelling.

Assessment 3A: Report

Choose a topic area focusing on a contemporary issue in Multimedia and Information Technology. The topic you choose must be determined in consultation with your tutor to ensure content suitability and to avoid excessive duplication of content areas with your peers. An extensive set of example topics will be made available but you are encouraged to identify topic areas of your own initiative. Topic areas selected on this basis should be of a narrow but detailed nature.

You are encouraged to select a specialised topic area. It is anticipated that doing so will enable you to undertake detailed study in an area that:

  • you hold intrinsic interest in
  • has specific relevance and application to an aspect of your personal and/or professional life either currently or in the future
  • you will find more motivating, and strive to achieve a higher quality product
  • you will embrace, and experience higher levels of self satisfaction
  • you will gain greater generic knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding research and the production of reports.

The report

Write a report which identifies, discusses and assesses a current issue in the area of Multimedia and Information Technology. Particular attention should be given to any social, cultural, ethical, and legal implications of these new technologies, and how these aspects may differ in different countries.

Due: Week 12 or 13 as arranged with tutor

Length: 8 – 10 minutes

Provide a brief presentation to the tutorial class based on the issues and findings that you identified in your report for Assessment 3A. This task provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your understanding of your chosen topic. Presentations may include, but are not limited to, PowerPoint.
