Listen carefully to the interview and consider the communication issues discussed. Read whatever background material you have gathered about the organisation. Drawing on materials from Topics 8 to 12 identify and evaluate the interpersonal communication issuees in your participant’s organisation from the employee’s point of view. Relate these issues to theory and use academic to support your findings. Present your findings in your report.
In this report:

  • Include a section which describes the company and the interviewee. Use pseudonyms for the employee and the company. Do now use real names
  • Important! Ensure you describe and reflect upon your methods for conducting this research: how did you select your interviewee, how did you persuade them to participate, what kind of interview techniques did you apply? Refer to relevant theories on persuation, presentations, interview techniques, possibly intercultural communication, and so on.
  • describe your findings, and analyse them using pertinent theories (from not just Module One but certainly from Module Three). Reference the theories appropriately
  • Include recommendations for your participant’s organisation. In your recommendations, make sure that you offer viable solutions. If there are no problems at all, then analyse which factors ensure that communication is so successful in this company.
  • Include the informed consent form as an appendix.

Throughout your report, do not refer to your participant or their organisation by their real names. Use pseudonyms at all times, to protect the identity of your participant.

In day-to-day life, communication is important to convey a message between people.  However, communication between people from different cultures faces difficulty arising from language barriers and ways of communicating with each other. The diverse nature of cultures is reflected in the differences in conducting a conversation. Lack of understanding other cultures might result in offending communication practices. This results in the need for effective communication practice.

Intercultural communication does include not only proficiency in language but also the ability to understand it along with the non-verbal communication associated with it, which form around 60% of the communication carried out. It is the effective transmission of information from people across different cultures. Intercultural communication has become a vital part of every field. Globalisation of economies has increased interlink between cultural diversity and organisational functions. Companies require a communication plan to interact from within as well as outside their organisation to perform better and succeed in the market.

This has enabled employees to increase their competency in cross-cultural communication. Individuals who have the capability to interact with members of different cultures tend to have the ability to utilise communication as a performance-enhancing measure. This report analyses the intercultural communication practices adopted in a social service organisation based on an interview with a volunteering employee. Due to the multi-cultural setup, this organisation is prone to challenges. However, communication acts as a platform to resolve conflict and manage a diverse team of employees.

1. Introduction

Communication is the backbone of human interaction without which no activity can take place. Communicating in a multi-cultural environment gives rise to complexity arising from the structural and cultural scenarios and barriers experienced in the operations of an organisation (Singh & Rampersad 2010). In order to overcome constraints, organisations develop practices that ensure effective communication is adopted to sustain future development. Though tools used for effective communication are straightforward, the actual usage depends on the interpretation of an individual. Employees working in multi-cultural environment have to develop skills to cope up with challenges arising from communication. As people from different backgrounds are involved, it is highly unlikely to achieve positive outcomes from the use of an effective communication plan. Communication allows people to be informed of the happenings in their surroundings and lack of communication hinders societal development (Lauring 2007). This is the same for organisations. This report is based on an interview with an employee of GMates about the intercultural communication practices adopted in the organisation. The methodology adopted to conduct an interview and gather details are pointed out. The findings from the interview and a discussion on the communication concepts used are detailed. Based on the analysis, conclusion and recommendations are arrived at.

2. Method

This report is based on an interview with a participant who is working in a multi-cultural organisation. The interviewee is a marketing officer of Indian origin who works with GMates, a social services organisation that assists international students to mingle with local communities and adapt to changes in the Australian environment. The mission of GMates is to organise events and programs for university students. The programs are conducted to create lasting connections between students from different cultural background, improve English language skills through the interaction with native speakers, to assist in overcoming indifference and exclusion and involvement in community services.
