Question

  1. Describe the process you employed to locate the two articles including key words entered, databases used, and search facilities assessed. Outline how you refined the search – include both successful and unsuccessful search mechanisms. Reflect on how this process assisted you to develop your database search skills. Use of first person (I, me, my) is acceptable in reflective writing.
  2. Describe how the chosen articles would relate to increased knowledge on the factors that are known to affect preterm birth amongst Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Using the National Health Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) system of evidence classification, identify and comment on the level of research evidence each article provides.
  3. Justify how your chosen two articles could contribute to the role of the nurse/midwife from either a professional, ethical, social or legal perspective, using current references. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Codes and Guidelines are useful tools in this context.

Solution

Introduction

Pre-term births correspond to the live births of infants prior to the accomplishment of 37 weeks of pregnancy. Women with aboriginal background and residing across Torres Strait Island remain predisposed to pre-term births with greater frequency as compared to the women located across other regions of Australia. Premature births among these women result in serious manifestations attributing to fetal growth retardation, cognitive deprivation, and fetal death, development of life-threatening conditions at the time of childbirth and chronic conditions among infants and mothers at later stages in life. This literature research identifies potential risk factors attributing to the termination of pregnancy among aboriginal women leading to pre-term births and corresponding congenital abnormalities among the premature infants.

Peer Reviewed Articles Identification Process

I utilized the primary keywords attributing to 'indigenous life expectancy' and 'infant mortality' for deriving the first peer-reviewed article by (Phillips, et al, 2014). However, I experienced multiple unsuccessful hits following the concomitant utilization of the terms 'aboriginal risks', 'pre-term risks' and 'indigenous pregnant women' across the databases attributing to PMC, Research Gate, CINAHL, MEDLINE & PubMed. The search executed within the year range of 2011 – 2016 to ascertain the effective retrieval of peer-reviewed articles within the span of the past Five years. However, the collaborative utilization of search terms 'perinatal health', 'antenatal', 'preterm birth', 'indigenous' and 'pregnancy' through various searching combinations retrieved the findings by (Buckskin, et al., 2013). I experienced a considerable enhancement of my database searching skills while exploring the research articles related to the identification of risk factors influencing the duration of pregnancy and pre-term births among the aboriginal women.
