Similarities between Deming, Juran, and Crosby for Quality improvement

In the modern world, managers are bound to stress on quality, by improving productivity, meeting customer requirements as well as reducing costs. In this context, the quality philosophies of Deming, Juran, and Crosby need to be stressed upon (Ranjan, 2013).

In order to understand the similarities between the three philosophies, we need to consider some important dimensions, as shown in the table below.

Dimensions of Similarity Deming Juran Crosby
What is the goal for quality? 'Fitness for the purpose', for which the good is intended (James, 2008). Juran stresses on the 'Fitness for use' Conformance to the underlying specifications and requirements, which is also according to the 'purpose'
Who decides the standards for quality? Deming's view says that customer is the most important part of production system, and is the sole motive for producing, hence quality can be determined by the degree to which his standards are met Juran also sees quality as something which can only be decided by the end consumer (James, 2008). Crosby also says that 'conformance' to the standards, are decided based on the consumer set specifications.
Who is responsible for quality management? Deming says that dimensions of quality are decided in the 'Board room' (Saad, 2000). He says that the system does not only need 'hard work' but 'the correct work' for improving fitness for purpose. Juran says that the responsibility for quality comes from Top management. He stresses on the concept of Pareto principle, and importance of training Crosby also stresses on the role of top management in creating a production environment with 'Zero defects' (Saad, 2000).

Improvement Philosophy

There are some good indicators which can assist the managers in understanding the existence of fear in the employees. They are listed below (Stanleigh, 2012).
1. If the workplace is highly competitive, then the fierce competition gives rise to anxiety and negative behaviour. When employees start displaying a lack of respect amongst their colleagues, it might be an indication of the existence of fear.
2. If the organisation focusses too much on short term goals and targets, employees might lose the purpose of long-term planning and start working towards delivering the short term goals. This results in incidents where the employees might fudge or manipulate data to meet organisation's expectations, as they start working with a survival motive. This again is an indicator of fear and needs to be removed as per Deming's 14 principles.
There are some methods which can be adopted to eliminate fear amongst the employees.
